The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.
- Cellular
- El Salvador and Guyana: L.M. Ericsson won two contracts from Digicel Group to provide nationwide GSM/EDGE networks in both countries. The contracts include GSM radio and transmission equipment, GPRS/EDGE networks, prepaid systems, network management systems, implementation services and training.
- Indonesia: Unity Wireless Corp. said it has begun installing 111 repeaters for GSM carrier Telkomsel as part of an ongoing contract.
Wi-Fi
- United States: MetroFi, which provides free municipal wireless Internet service, announced the next phase of its free wireless coverage plan for the city of Portland, Ore., which will include coverage in Pearl, Old Town, Portland State University’s surrounding areas, Hosford-Abernethy, Richmond and Sunnyside.
WiMAX - Kuwait: Aperto Networks said it won a contract to deploy a nationwide WiMAX network for Arab Telecom using its PacketWave equipment.
Miscellaneous - United States: The U.S. Army has awarded a contract to Nokia Corp. to build a W-CDMA/HSDPA network that will allow the Army to evaluate potential applications for 3G wireless technologies for defense purposes.
