S. Korea, Dominican Republic sign mobile broadband deal

SEOUL, Feb. 11 (Yonhap) — South Korea and the Dominican Republic signed a preliminary agreement on Friday to cooperate in the establishment of a commercial ground-based mobile broadband service in the Caribbean country.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) aims to help the allocation of frequency for the mobile service, to allow terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) to take root in the Latin American country and calls for technology exchange and training of expert personnel, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said.

The pact was reached as Santo Domingo is expected to allocate a frequency for its T-DMB service in March.

T-DMB is a system that allows users to watch TV on various handheld mobile devices while on the move. South Korea was the first country in the world to start commercial services in 2006, and the system has been shipped to 18 countries so far. Of the total, five are in actual use with the rest being examined for commercial viability.
