Mavenir Systems is looking to secure its position in the LTE network with the purchase of Stoke, a leading provider of LTE security gateways. Stoke’s solutions help mobile operators prevent security breaches and mitigate signaling storms, and the company has a strong roster of customers and partners in the Asia Pacific and EMEA regions. Gartner estimates that Stoke is one of the top 10 providers of carrier class network firewall solutions.
LTE networks are inherently less secure than their 3G predecessors, and mobile operators are keenly interested in solutions that can scale to accommodate traffic growth without compromising security. Mavenir sees Stoke’s security gateway as a logical complement to its existing portfolio.
“Combined with our session border controller and evolved packet data gateway (ePDG), Stoke’s LTE security gateway (SEG) enables Mavenir to deliver a complete, secure, end-to-end solution to our customers globally,” said Pardeep Kohli, president and CEO of Mavenir Systems. “Additionally, this acquisition expedites a key part of our growth strategy by providing penetration to the Japanese and South Korean markets, and strategically positions us in the emerging small cells market.”
In the small cell security gateway market, Stoke competes with Cisco, Genband and Radisys, among others. Increasingly, small cell security gateway vendors are exploring Wi-Fi integration as their customers look for solutions that can authenticate users to more than one network.
Texas-based Mavenir Systems focuses on software-based networking solutions and has been a leader in the move to virtualize network functionality. The company said recently that NFV is still in its infancy, and that it does not expect significant deployments until next year at the earliest.
Mavenir did not share financial details related to the Stoke acquisition, but did say that the deal should close within the next few days.
