Builds on 5G MoU signed by Ericsson, China Mobile
Ericsson said it is joining China Mobile’s 5G Joint Innovation Center program to accelerate development of next-generation wireless networks. The program looks to establish a cross-industry ecosystem and setting up an open lab to provide a platform for new products and applications.
The center aims to conduct joint innovation on applications and products with industry partners in different areas including basic communications, the “Internet of Things,” telematics, industrial Internet, cloud robotics and virtual/augmented reality. Other companies which are also part of the initiative are Huawei, ZTE, Nokia, Qualcomm, Datang and Intel.
In January 2016, Ericsson and the China Mobile Research Institute signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the development of its Open NFV Lab and the NovoNet. In December 2015, the parties signed another MoU covering an extensive range of “5G” technology research and development cooperation.
China Mobile currently counts nearly 340 million LTE customers, having initially launched LTE services in December 2013, using spectrum in the 1900 MHz, 2.3 GHz and 2.5 GHz bands. The operator claims to have deployed 1.10 million TD-LTE base stations across the country as of the end of 2015, covering more than 1.2 billion potential customers.
HGC deploys Infinera’s Mobile Fronthaul in Hong Kong
In other APAC news, Hutchison Global Communications announced the deployment of U.S. firm Infinera’s Mobile Fronthaul solution across the telco’s optical network in Hong Kong. The deployment is expected to allow Hutchinson to provide mobile operators with high capacity active mobile fronthaul services within the region.
Infinera said the deployment supports growth of 3G and LTE traffic, as well as for a smooth transition to 5G services.
