Croatia, Malaysia to deploy Flarion’s Flash-OFDM service, Japan Telecom to test protocol

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia-Retel d.o.o. and Arbital Communications Sdn. Bhd. said they will deploy a mobile broadband service in Zagreb, Croatia, using Flarion Technologies Inc.’s Flash-OFDM technology.

Flarion’s Flash-OFDM technology will provide Croatian enterprise and residential customers with wireless broadband access.

“We are also proud to be one of the first in the world to deploy a Flash-OFDM commercial network for mobile broadband services for IP Mobility, formerly known as Ikram Saksama Sdn Bhd, who will be launching services in Malaysia within the next six to nine months,” said Saw Leng Kooi, executive director of Arbital Communications.

“Croatia has taken the necessary steps to make accessible this new broadband technology by providing access to spectrum and development of a new network,” said Y.B. Datuk Seri Dr. Lim Keng Yaik, Malaysian minister of energy, water and communications. “Malaysia will also deploy this mobile broadband technology to the rural areas as a last-mile solution to offer fast, mobile and affordable services.”

In other news, Flarion reported a trial of its Flash-OFDM technology by Japan Telecom Co. Ltd. and Tohoku University’s Research Center in Sendai, Japan, that will include seamless roaming and handoff between Flarion’s wide-area technology and fixed Wi-Fi access points.

The mobile broadband trial will use the 2 GHz frequency band recently given to Japan Telecom by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and will be conducted at Tohoku University.

“The technology trial objectives are to verify high-speed Internet access and seamless roaming, as well as mobile-to-fixed handoff with wireless [local area networks] using the IEEE 802.11b/g/a standard and Flash-OFDM,” noted Tohoku University Professor Kazuo Tsubouchi. “Our goal is to help prove the ability of IP-based technologies to work in harmony to help create a seamless broadband experience for people, government and public-safety organizations, using fixed and mobile networks.”
