Huawei hires former Samsung telecom exec (RCR Mobile Minute)

Huawei has hired George Reed to head up solutions and marketing for Huawei Technologies. Reed will lead product management, solutions development, integrated marketing communications and sales management across wireless and wireline for Huawei’s carrier and enterprise business groups in the United States. Reed said in a statement that Huawei “continues to make deep investments in next-generation technologies that I am excited to promote.”

Reed has been running his own wireless consulting group, Postremo Wireless Consulting, for the past three years. During that time, he also spent a year as a SVP at Samsung Telecommunications America. In addition to Samsung, Reed has worked at Tellabs, Azimuth, Fujitsu, AT&T Bell Labs, Alcatel and ADC.

Huawei is a leading global provider of wireless infrastructure, but U.S. carriers have traditionally tapped the European manufacturers, and more recently Samsung, for network builds. Now as infrastructure spending shifts from coverage to capacity and more spending is focused on distributed antenna systems and small cells, the Asian powerhouses have a new chance to make inroads with North American carriers. Security concerns have shut Huawei out of some parts of the U.S. market but those concerns may be less of an issue when it comes to small cells.

Reed’s new role at Huawei appears to be similar to his role at Samsung Telecommunications, where he managed business development and product development in support of new business.

Samsung is of course the world’s largest maker of smartphones and today the company unveiled its fall lineup. For more on that see today’s video.
