Latest test is part of the IMT-2020 5G Promotion Group
Huawei announced it has completed the second phase of 5G technology R&D testing organized by the IMT-2020 5G Promotion Group in Beijing. Using a massive 200 megahertz channel of spectrum in the C-band, Huawei said it achieved a peak rate of more than 32Gbps in the downlink.
The vendor integrated likely 5G New Radio (NR), an as-yet unstandardized specification, technologies including filtered-OFDM, new frame structure, new channel coding, new parameter sets, massive MIMO and sparse code multiple access (SCMA).
The vendor also verified the performance of multiple core technologies based on the results of the first phase of testing, which were incorporated into 3GPP standards.
During the second phase test, Huawei provided end-to-end isolated network slices from pre-standard 5G NR to networks using one set of telecom infrastructure. At the test site in Huairou district of Beijing, more than 100 channels of 4K video were streamed in vehicle-mounted mobile applications, showcasing a high-quality experience for future C-band enhanced mobile broadband, Huawei said.
“These tests further contribute to add confidence in promoting the development of 5G technology innovation, while jointly accelerating the formation of unified 5G standards,” Wang Zhiqin, deputy director of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology and IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, said.
Huawei also said that it is exploring key services during the 5G technology R&D test, which includes partnering with vertical industries to apply 5G to remotely controlled driving of vehicles and drones, holographic calls, smart manufacturing and other use cases.
China has started preparation early for next-generation networks, establishing the IMT-2020 5G Promotion Group in February 2013 to coordinate efforts by mobile service operators, manufacturers and research institutes. China aims to commercialize 5G mobile networks as early as 2020.
Operators participating in the IMT-2020 Promotion Group include China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom and Japanese telecom operator NTT DoCoMo. Vendors which are part of the initiative are Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson, Nokia, Datang and Samsung. A number of chipset and test measurement vendors, including Qualcomm, Intel, Mediatek, Ctec, Keysight Technologies and Rohde & Schwartz are also part of the initiative.
