3GUpload raieses $20M, acquires Mophone

 LAS VEGAS—3GUpload, which provides direct-to-consumer mobile entertainment, said it netted $20 million in venture funding from VantagePoint Venture Partners.

VantagePoint is one of the investors behind the popular social networking Web site, Myspace.com, noted 3Gupload.

The company also announced it acquired mobile community company Mophone and plans to re-launch the combined entertainment and social networking company under a new brand later this year. Mophone’s chief executive officer, William Bryant, will become CEO of the combined company.

3GUpload currently offers music tones, polyphonic ringtones, voice tones, sound effects, screensavers and wallpapers, mobile games and utilities to wireless users.

Mobile social networking is attracting increasing attention with a variety of carriers and mobile virtual network operators, including Alltel, Amp’d Mobile and Helio, positioning themselves to offer mobile community services.
