ATLANTA-In conjunction with Symbol Technologies, UPS has developed the fourth generation of Delivery Information Access Devices, which include Global Positioning System links, built-in GPRS and CDMA radios and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
The DIAD IV devices also will have color screens to allow for color-coded messages and will feature 128 megabytes of memory, which is 20 times that of the DIAD III version. UPS will begin deploying the latest generation next year after testing them this year.
“When it is fully deployed in 2004, the DIAD IV will be the final piece of the company’s massive new Bluetooth/Wi-Fi network, which will be in 1,700 UPS facilities around the world by June (2003),” the company said.
“UPS pioneered the use of handheld computers in the shipping industry in 1991 when it introduced the first DIAD. . The DIAD IV will be the first handheld computer to include built-in wireless connectivity options for either personal, local or wide-area networks.”
