Malaysia to review cell operators’ service obligation

NEW DELHI, India-The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has decided to review universal service obligation of telecom operators, including cellular service providers.

It has proposed to include several new services, including short message service (SMS) and other wireless data services, in the list of designated services for the sake of determining service obligation. Only voice services on cellular networks currently are included in this list.

The commission requires all licensees to contribute to the universal service provision (USP) fund. Each licensee’s contribution depends on annual revenues from designated services and certain weighted factors.
