China-based electronics maker SinoHub Inc. (SIHI) said it has received an initial order to manufacture 20,000 3G mobile phones for China Unicom (CHU). SinoHub said it expects to ship the order during the first quarter.
SinoHub said it will initially produce a single 3G device for China Unicom supporting dual SIM cards for W-CDMA and GSM. The devices will initially be sold in China Unicom retail locations, but SinoHub noted that it recently purchased a license from a third party that should allow it to sell devices directly to consumers.
China Unicom is the second largest mobile phone operator in China with approximately 166 million subscribers, including 12.8 million 3G subscribers. China Unicom currently operates W-CDMA/GSM-based network in 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China.
