NEW ORLEANS-Glenayre Technologies Inc. introduced a two-way wireless communications module called @ctiveLink for the Visor handheld computer from Handspring Inc., the first ReFLEX-based two-way wireless data solution for a Palm operating system device.
The module is designed to snap into the Springboard expansion slot on the back of the Visor devices. With it, the device can access Internet-based messaging and information applications, the company said.
Glenayre said it is teaming with Aether Systems Inc. and Metrocall Inc.’s Inciscent joint venture to develop and distribute wireless-enabling solutions using the @ctiveLink module. The agreement calls for Aether to contribute its Aether Intelligent Messaging platform so the wirelessly connected device can access Internet content and enterprise applications. Inciscent will then provide the solution to its customer base of small office/home office and mid-sized business markets, Glenayre said.
In addition, Glenayre has made available a software developer kit to third-party application developers to create two-way Palm OS applications based on ReFLEX technology for the Visor devices. The product is expected to be commercially available in July.
The company also said it expanded its partnership with JP Systems Inc. to deliver e-commerce services to the AccessLink II and @ctiveLink messaging devices, using JP System’s One-Touch Messaging Platform and InfoBeam Internet-extension technologies.
By bundling these JP System technologies, Glenayre said customers using the AccessLink II or @ctiveLink wireless messaging devices will be able to receive Internet-based content, including mobile e-commerce and various interactive information services.
In other Glenayre news, the company entered into a memorandum of understanding with GoSMS.com, under which Glenayre will act as the prime OEM channel in North America, Asia Pacific and other global markets for GoSMS.com’s technology.
GoSMS offers users database-independent Web content information, using both short message services and Wireless Application Protocol technologies, as well as a common graphical user interface tool for customization purposes.
Finally, Glenayre announced its Unified Messaging version 1.5 is now commercially available. The application manages e-mail, voice and data networks so customers can receive all their messages from one location, using a common mailbox.
