ORANGEBURG, N.Y.-In an effort to maintain and improve its service quality and reliability in the New York metro area, Bell Atlantic Mobile unveiled its new mobile testing vehicle loaded with $250,000 of equipment.
The loaded blue station wagon drives around the New York area five days a week, logging about 3,000 miles each month. An array of wireless phones mounted on the station wagon’s cargo area are connected to computer equipment. Each phone repeatedly calls on the wireless networks of one of the six companies licensed to serve the region and monitors service performance and quality.
Fifteen antennas located on the roof of the car give each wireless phone inside an equal chance of picking up a signal from the service provider it monitors, said the company.
