BELLSOUTH MOBILITY ANNOUNCES NEW ERGONOMIC CELLULAR PHONE

ATLANTA-BellSouth Mobility DCS says the new ergonomically designed, 1900 MHz phone it now offers will be more comfortable, easier to use and is “the phone people are calling for.”

Northern Telecom Inc. manufactured the phone for BellSouth based on marketing and consumer research conducted by the two companies. BellSouth and Nortel have a three-year multimillion dollar supply agreement for the handset, BellSouth’s model number 2100.

BellSouth said it is the first personal communications services operator to offer the phone. It weighs less than 8 ounces and has a four-line display for text messages. The ear piece features an acoustic design patented by Nortel, BellSouth said.

The phone will work on the BellSouth Mobility DCS network in the Carolinas and eastern Tennessee and in other systems that use Global System for Mobile communications technology at 1900 MHz. It is branded BellSouth on the front, Nortel on the back.

The handset is not dual frequency, and cannot default to the 800 MHz analog network.
