CLEARNET ANNOUNCES SERVICE FOR CANADIAN BUSINESS USERS

TORONTO-Clearnet Communications Inc. has launched its business communications service, a digital wireless telecommunications service that integrates mobile phone, dispatch or group and private call radio, alphanumeric paging and messaging services in one handset.

Clearnet said the service uses Motorola Inc.s integrated Digital Enhanced Network. The technology, also used by Nextel Communications Inc., recently was improve by Motorola to meet the needs of the business users. Enhanced features and capabilities will be delivered primarily by intelligent switching, Time Division Multiple Access technology and value-added network equipment, said Clearnet.

Marketed under the name MiKE, the service is planned to debut in a contiguous corridor from Windsor to Quebec City, with a rollout in western Canada planned in 1997.

“For the first time, three wireless services are offered in one handset and on one network,” said George Cope, Clearnet’s president and chief executive officer. “MiKE’s integrated phone, two-way radio and text message features are combined with friendly pricing and rugged durability to deliver unparalleled business benefits.

Users can easily jump from one feature to another with the touch of a button, and MiKE’s 100 percent digital network delivers unsurpassed security, privacy and call clarity.”

Clearnet plans to launch personal communications services as well in 1997.
