The mobile device market is expected to show shipments of 289 million units during the first quarter of 2008, according to a new study from ABI Research.
“Operators and distributors continued to top up their inventories in [Q1 2008] after a particularly strong [Q4 2007],” said Jake Saunders, VP at ABI. “Year on year, [Q1 2008] was up 13.7%, but [Q2 2008] is likely to be softer than in previous years.”
The firm said shipments in developed markets have softened, but emerging markets like Asia-Pacific, South America and Middle East/Africa are growing at mid-20s percentages. And while prices on many consumer goods have been inflated in recent months, the average selling price for mobile devices has shown price erosion for all manufacturers, said ABI.
