RESTON, Va.—Nextel Communications Inc. said it added 502,000 customers during the first quarter, ahead of analysts’ expectations of around 475,000 net subscriber additions. The carrier ended the quarter with 9.2 million domestic customers. Average revenue per user for the quarter was in line with expectations at $68.
The strong customer additions and ARPU results helped Nextel post $2 billion in domestic revenue for the first quarter a 22-percent increase from the $1.6 billion reported last year. Consolidated net losses totaled $428 million, a loss of 56 cents per share.
