FREMONT, Calif.-For the sake of wireless and wireline marriages, the International Packet Communications Consortium said it has established a working group to define the reference architecture for converged networks.
The group will look at DSL, fiber and cable on the wireleine side and third-generation standards, Wi-Fi and WiMAX for wireless, according to IPCC.
The companies behind the initiative are Alcatel Alsthom, Brooktrout, Cisco Systems Inc, Convedia, eLEC, Sonus, Tekelec, Time Warner Telecom and UTStarcom.
“We are at an inflection point in our industry as various packet and wireless networks are converging,” said Michael Khalilian, chairman and president of IPCC, which is inviting other industry players to join.
IPCC said it is also in touch with other standards bodies like ANSI, ETSI, IETF, 3GPP as well as the DSL and WiMAX forums.
