ST. LOUIS-Ameritech Corp. said it has deployed its wireless packet data service, based on the Cellular Digital Packet Data standard, in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
Ameritech said the new service is designed specifically for sending and receiving computerized information from remote locations. It enables customers to transmit short data files or messages on the cellular network, allowing for quicker access time, added security and significant cost savings when compared to other forms of wireless data communications, the company said.
Ameritech noted the need for remote access to information by businesses continues to grow; industry experts expect the number of wireless data customers to exceed 13 million nationwide by the year 2000.
“As computing devices become more portable and workers continue to embrace the mobile office concept, wireless data communication is evolving even faster than voice technology,” said Linda Wokoun, vice president of marketing for Ameritech Cellular Services.
